SPF, which is short for Sender Policy Framework, is an e-mail safety system, that is designed to verify whether an email message is sent by a licensed server. Using SPF protection for a given domain will prevent the faking of emails generated with the domain. In simple words: activating this feature for a domain generates a specific record in the Domain Name System (DNS) containing the IP addresses of the servers that are allowed to send emails from mailboxes under the domain. Once this record propagates globally, it exists on all the DNS servers that route the Internet traffic. When some e-mail message is sent, the first DNS server it uses verifies if it originates from an authorized server. When it does, it is sent to the destination address, however if it does not originate from a server part of the SPF record for the particular domain, it's rejected. Thus nobody can mask an e-mail address then make it look as if you're e-mailing spam. This technique is also termed email spoofing.

SPF Protection in Shared Web Hosting

If you host your domains in a shared web hosting account with us and we handle the emails for them, you'll be able to activate SPF protection for all of them with several clicks in your Hepsia Control Panel. The service can be found in its own section where you can see which domain names are currently protected. For the ones that are not, you can activate the SPF protection service and configure a number of things in the process - the hostnames of the mail servers that are allowed to send messages from your e-mail addresses, the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses of these servers, as well as to create a rule that email messages can be sent only if your domain names have our MX records. The last mentioned option is the most secure one, but you can use it in the event that we manage the emails for your domain names and you are not using a different email provider. The newly created records will propagate within a day and nobody will be able to forge the FROM field in an email with your e-mail addresses.

SPF Protection in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server account from us, you'll be able to secure your emails by enabling the SPF protection service for every domain name hosted in the account with just a couple of clicks. You can do this in the Emails section of our Hepsia Control Panel which is provided with the semi-dedicated accounts and even when you have no previous experience with these things, you won't have any problems to enable the security. Everything that you will have to do is to choose a domain from a drop-down menu and then type in the mail server hostname and IPv4 or IPv6 address. Once the updated record propagates, messages from your emails will be delivered around the world only if they were sent from that server. In case your emails are handled by our company and not by some third-party provider, you will also be able to benefit from an option for e-mail messages to be mailed only when the domain has our MX records and this is the safest option.
