Setting up a CNAME record for any of the domains or subdomains you've got in the hosting account will permit you to forward it to a different domain/subdomain. The forwarded domain address will lose all of its records - A, MX etc, and will take the records of the domain it's being pointed to. In this light, you simply can't set up a CNAME record to point your domain to a third-party company and retain a functional email service with the first hosting provider. It's also essential to know that a CNAME record is always a string of words and never a number because it is generally wrongly identified as the A record of the domain name being forwarded. One of the main uses of a CNAME record is to forward a domain name you own through one company to the servers of some other company assuming you have set up a website with the latter. In this way, the website will appear under your own domain, not under some subdomain provided by the third-party company.

CNAME Records in Shared Web Hosting

Creating a CNAME record with our Linux shared web hosting is very easy. Our in-house built Hepsia CP has a section devoted to the DNS records of your domains, so you can create a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted inside your account in a couple of basic steps. You can find a video tutorial in the same section where you can see the process first-hand. This feature gives you various options - if you create a company website on our end, for instance, the staff can use their emails with the company domain, not with the address of our mail server. If you decide to create an Internet site through a different company that offers online web design services, you can easily redirect a domain hosted here and use it for the website. Last, but not least, in case you have an online store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you can set up a CNAME record for the www subdomain and direct it to the main domain name, so all your customers are going to be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server through our company and you wish to create a CNAME record, it will require just a couple of clicks to complete this task. The plans are handled using our in-house built Hepsia hosting CP where you will find a section dedicated to the DNS records of the domain addresses and subdomains hosted in the account. To set up a CNAME record, you'll only have to pick the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), type where the latter will be forwarded to and save the change. The new record will be active almost immediately in our system and will propagate worldwide within several hours. Changing or deleting an existing CNAME record within the account is equally easy and takes a click. In case you experience any difficulties, you can go through our detailed help article, watch the short video on the subject that we have added in the CP, or you can simply contact us for assistance.
